ETIAS for Germany: What You Need to Know for 2026

The EU has rescheduled the ETIAS Rollout to the last quarter of 2026. See further details about the revised timeline.

Visiting Germany or Europe in 2026? There’s a new travel requirement you need to know about – the European Travel Information and Authorization System or ETIAS. Starting in late 2026, travelers from visa-exempt countries will need this authorization to travel to Germany and other European countries.

So whether you were thinking of exploring Bavaria, touring Berlin’s iconic landmarks, or visiting the best German castles in the upcoming year, this is an essential step in your travel planning! In this guide, we break down what ETIAS is, how to apply, and what it means for your upcoming trip to Germany.

Quick Answer

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is a new entry requirement for travelers from visa-exempt countries visiting Germany and the Schengen Area. It launches in late 2026, costs €7, and is valid for 3 years. Most applications are approved within minutes. You must apply online before traveling, as it is not available on arrival.

Our Experience

We have been traveling to Germany for over 35 years. We frequently fly to Germany from the US and enter on US passports. We’ve been keeping up with ETIAS developments so we can advise our clients so they can travel with confidence.

What is ETIAS?

The ETIAS travel authorization is an entry requirement introduced by the European Union for travelers from visa-exempt countries. With millions of travelers visiting the Schengen area (most European countries) every year, this system aims to strengthen security measures across the borders, prevent irregular or unauthorized stays, and streamline border checks.

This system essentially pre-screens and vets travelers for potential risks such as criminal activity or health concerns. With this additional layer of security, EU authorities hope to enhance safety for both travelers and residents while also ensuring a smooth travel experience.

Who Needs ETIAS to Travel to Germany?

If you’re from a country that does NOT require a visa to visit the Schengen area, then you need ETIAS. Some of these countries include: the United States, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Singapore, Brazil, and many more. You may check the official EU website to see the full list.

If you’re a national from any of those countries and planning a short stay in Germany, then this requirement applies to you. On the other hand, if you have a Schengen visa or are resident of an EU country then this isn’t applicable to you.

What Do I Need to Apply for ETIAS?

The application process will be online and is expected to be fairly simple and straightforward. But since the system is not yet operational, the exact process may be subject to final adjustments. Always refer to the official EU website for updates and application details. Here’s what we know so far about the documents you need and what information needs to be included in the application form.

Travel document

You will need a valid travel document, such as your passport, to which a visa may be affixed. Your travel document must meet certain criteria to ensure eligibility.

It should not expire in less than three months from the date you submit the application and it should not be more than 10 years old. If your travel document does not meet these requirements then you may be rejected.

Information for the application

The application will ask you for the following information:

  • Personal information:
    • Name(s), surname, date and place of birth, nationality, home address, parents’ first names, email address and phone number
  • Travel document details
  • Details about your level of education and current occupation
  • Details about your intended travel and stay in any of the countries requiring ETIAS;
  • Details about any criminal convictions, any past travels to war or conflict zones, and whether you have recently been subject of a decision requiring you to leave the territory of any country

For minors (under 18 years old), a parent or legal guardian must submit the application.

Application fee

The application fee is only 7 euros. There will be various online payment options available. Applicants under 18, over 70, or family members of EU citizens are exempt from the fee.

Fee€7 (free for under 18, over 70, EU family members)
Passport validity requiredMust not expire within 3 months; must be under 10 years old

How Long Does the Application Take?

Filling out the online application itself is quick and easy. After submitting, most applications will be processed within minutes and at most 96 hours. There are some cases where applicants may be asked to provide additional supporting documentation or to undergo an interview. This can take up to 30 days, so it’s highly recommended that you apply well ahead of your travel dates.

Once your application is processed, you will receive an email at the email address you provided. Make sure to check your spam folder since it can sometimes get filtered.

If your application is rejected, you have the right to appeal the decision. The email of your outcome application will include more information about the process. You may also try applying again.

How Long Will My ETIAS Travel Authorization Be Valid For?

Once approved, your ETIAS travel authorization will be valid for up to three years or until your linked travel document/passport expires, whichever comes first. So if you get a new passport, you need to get a new ETIAS travel authorization. You will be able to apply for a new one 120 days before the expiry of your current travel authorization.

ETIAS Application Checklist

Before you apply, make sure you have the following ready:

  • Valid passport (not expiring within 3 months, issued within the last 10 years)
  • Email address (confirmation will be sent here — check spam)
  • Payment method for €7 fee (exemptions apply)
  • Details of your planned travel to the Schengen Area
  • Information about education and current occupation
  • Background information (criminal convictions, travel to conflict zones if applicable)
  • For minors: parent or legal guardian to complete the application

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ETIAS the same as a visa for Germany?

No, ETIAS is not a visa. It is a travel authorization for people who already travel to Europe visa-free — such as US, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens. The application is entirely online, costs €7, and takes minutes to complete. A traditional visa is a separate, more involved process required for citizens of other countries.

When does ETIAS start and do I need it for 2026 travel?

ETIAS is currently scheduled to launch in the last quarter of 2026. If you are traveling to Germany or the Schengen Area before it launches, you do not need it yet. Once it goes live, it will be required before boarding any transport to Europe. Check the official EU website for the most up-to-date launch timeline before booking travel.

Can I apply for ETIAS on arrival in Germany?

No. ETIAS must be applied for before you travel — it is not available on arrival. Since most applications are processed within minutes, there is no reason to wait until the last minute. Apply at least a few weeks before your trip in case your application requires additional review, which can take up to 30 days.

Does ETIAS cover all of Europe or just Germany?

One ETIAS authorization covers all Schengen Area countries, not just Germany. This includes most EU member states as well as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. You do not need a separate ETIAS for each country you plan to visit during a single trip.
