Gengenbach itself is a very small little town but quite cute. The food is predominantly Italian - still don't know why. In town itself I don't think you need more than a day, but you are close to Strassburg and several other small towns, hikes and wineries nearby.

We chose Gengenbach as a base as it was easy to get train to other places and go for local walks. It is a pleasant village which is quite picturesque. It is not touristy. There are quite a few restaurants. Menus only in German so make sure you have a phrase book!

What an amazing village and the location of the property was perfect. In the evenings the entire family (8) met at the cafe owned by the property owners and had ice cream, dessert, wine and or beer. DELICIOUS!! It was a lovely way to end each day. We all want to come back!

This is a small friendly town with lots of dining options, a museum, a night-time tour of the town with a historical talk by the Nachtwaechter, beautiful church. In December the Rathaus is turned into the "world's largest Advent calendar."

1) Gengenbach is a picturesque and quaint town in the Black Forest region. It has good transport connections to other towns in Black Forest and makes a good base for visiting Black Forest.
2) Unfortunately when we were there in end-Sep 2022, there were numerous train delays between Gengenbach and Munich and on many routes throughout Germany. On our 2nd day there, a strike in France went on for 36 hours and caused reduced train service and worse train delays. Train schedules were so fluid that they changed from as frequently as every 30 mins. All this added an additional 5 hours to our total travelling time between towns in Black Forest, which originally would have taken only about 2 hours both ways. It was very trying and almost ruined our experience in Black Forest.
3) Gengenbach is mostly German-speaking and the shops, restaurants and hotels had few English-speaking staff. We were the few Asian people there and at most of these places, we received many long stares and people were always very surprised to hear us speak fluent English.
4) At Frei (Steinkellerhaus) restaurant, we walked in to ask for a table for 4. The restaurant was only half empty. A male waiter rudely told us that he had a table but their menus were only in German and they had no English menu. When we politely asked it if it was possible for him to let us know the menu items in English, he became even more rude and angrily told us that we had to translate the menu into English ourselves using the Internet and looked ready to kick us out of the restaurant. We found this terribly offensive and left immediately.
5) It is truly unfortunate that such a picturesque area which has inspired world famous fairytales, is the home of Black Forest cake and ham and whose main industry is tourism, has limited itself by language. If only it catered better to English-speaking tourists …
Perfect location! So pleased we stayed in Gengenbach. Our hosts were friendly and very welcoming. The apartment was clean and the perfect size for the 2 of us. Comfortable bed and well equipped kitchen. It was also handy to be able to use the washing machine and dryer to wash our clothes. We would definitely stay here again if we ever get to visit the Black Forest again.
The location could not be any better - just steps from the quaint and charming center of Gengenbach. The apartment is very spacious, exceptionally clean with everything that you will need. When I had a problem starting the washing machine, the owner was over in minutes to show me what to do. Such a comfortable place to come home to after long days of exploring.
Spacious basement apartment, large living room, bathroom and bedrooms with plenty of storage space. Well equipped kitchen. Brighter than expected from photos. Use of washing machine/tumble dryer in shared utility room. Less than 15 minute walk from train station, and 5 min to town centre. Good base for visiting the Schwarzwald. Good communication from host.
The staff is very nice and friendly, the receptionist welcomed us and gave us a tour of the property - we really appreciated that.
Very clean and quiet room with comfortable beds.
The breakfast was exceptional, and the dining room was organized with a waitress.
Parking lot available on the spot.
Great location, in the heart of Gengenbach.
Lovely hotel - very clean and comfortable. Good powerful shower. Worth paying the extra for a balcony. Nice breakfast with lots of choice - eggs to order. On the outskirts of town - approx an easy 20 min walk to restaurants. Wouldn't hesitate to return if in the area. Plenty of free parking.
The apartment is newly renovated to an extremely high standard. Very spacious and comfortable. The location is perfect - a two minute walk to the old town. Katrin and Jochen were welcoming hosts and provided all the information we needed for a fantastic few days in Gengenbach.
This was a beautiful place in an amazing little town. It was full of character and really nicely presented. It was great staying somewhere so old and in such a lovely location. Gengenbach itself was a brilliant place, loads of restaurants and cafes in beautiful countryside.
Communication was great. The apartment was super clean and everything was new. We were so close to the town of Gengenbach, a charming town that looked like a postcard. We were not too far from the Black Forest. Edgar was a wonderful host.
The Location was awesome! It is as close to downtown Gengenbach as you can possibly get. This makes walks in the city a breeze, especially in the early morning. The apartment was very clean and had nearly everything you'd need.
The hotel's location was quite central and it's easy to get anywhere. The rooms were comfortable, heating was excellent, and the toilets were very clean. Overall, it was a warm and cosy stay in the middle of winter!
The restaurant downstairs was phenomenal and served one of the best meals of my trip, breakfast was also impressive. Staff were lovely and helpful. I’d certainly make it a stop on my next trip back to Germany!
Good hotel in general, if you actually want to stay in Gengenbach. Comfortable beds, big enough rooms, clean, decent food. It is quite reachable from the train station (10 min walk). Friendly enough staff.
